Tactile Ground Surface Indicators

Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) offer individuals who are vision impaired a consistent and reliable system of tactile cues, detectable by foot or cane. These cues are designed to serve two primary functions: directional guidance and hazard warning.

At Braille Tactile Signs Aust. we are an established and experienced supplier with extensive knowledge in providing a diverse range of TGSI products. Our offerings include ceramic, polyurethane, and stainless steel tiles, as well as metal and plastic flat back options, and spigot and screw-in TGSIs, available in various colours.

What Is the Purpose of TGSI’s?

Individuals can use their White Long Cane in conjunction with Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) to navigate their surroundings safely and independently. As the individual walks, they extend the cane in front of them, making contact with the ground. When the cane encounters a TGSI, the person feels the tactile patterns through the cane's handle.

By following the pattern of TGSIs underfoot, individuals can maintain their intended path and detect any upcoming hazards or changes in direction. This tactile feedback enables them to navigate safely through various environments, whether indoors or outdoors, with greater confidence and independence.

Why Are TGSI’s So Important?

Safety

These indicators help those who are blind or have low vision identify pathways, hazards, changes in elevation, and other important information that sighted individuals often take for granted. It could stop them from walking into the path of oncoming traffic, tripping over objects or falling down a staircase.

Accessibility

Accessible public spaces help everyone move around independently and confidently. Without TGSIs, individuals with a vision impairment may struggle to navigate unfamiliar environments, leading to potential accidents or barriers to participation in daily activities.

Legal Requirement

Many countries have regulations and accessibility standards that mandate the installation of TGSIs in certain public areas. Compliance with these standards ensures that public spaces are accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of vision.

In Australia, TGSIs are regulated by standards outlined in the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1428.4.1:2009, which provides guidelines for the design and installation of TGSIs in public spaces. These standards specify the dimensions, spacing, and colour contrast requirements for TGSIs to ensure effectiveness and compliance with accessibility regulations. Read More

Inclusivity

People of all abilities have the right to be dignified, safe and independent when accessing buildings, public facilities and services. The presence of TGSI’s in public environments fosters a sense of belonging and equality within society. As the population continues to age, it is estimated that the percentage of people with a degree of vision impairment will also grow significantly. The responsibility to cater for this segment of our population rests on those who design and build structures, in order to ensure a safe and easy access to public facilities.

Ribbed VS Studded TGSI’s - What Is The Difference?

Studded and ribbed Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSIs) serve distinct purposes in aiding individuals with low vision or blindness in navigating public spaces.

Ribbed

Ribbed TGSIs feature a series of elongated, parallel lines running perpendicular to the direction of travel. These provide directional guidance, helping individuals maintain their intended path.

Studded

Studded TGSIs, on the other hand, are characterised by small, rounded protrusions evenly distributed across their surface. These indicators signal potential hazards or changes in elevation, alerting individuals to tread with caution.

Are TGSI’s Available in Different Colours?

Yes! They are. Up to 90% of people with a vision impairment still retain some sight. For this reason, luminance contrast can play an important role for TGSI’s. People with low vision or blindness use luminance contrast as well as tactile cues as a means of guidance.
